Who Needs a Low Vision Exam?
All people benefit from routine eye exams to ensure their eyes are healthy and to detect early warning signs of vision problems. However, certain individuals require additional services beyond the standard eye exam. This includes individuals who already have signs and symptoms of low vision, including blurry vision, trouble seeing at night, and eye fatigue or headaches when looking at close-up or faraway objects.Other people who can benefit from low vision evaluations include:
- People with certain health conditions that are risk factors for low vision, including obesity and diabetes
- Children who struggle to see the board in class or have reports of behavioral problems (as these often indicate an undiagnosed vision problem)
- Anyone with a family history of low vision
What to Expect on a Low Vision Evaluation
A low vision evaluation takes about 60 minutes. During this evaluation, an eye doctor reviews your medical and family history and discusses your concerns and goals. Your optometrist also assesses the internal and external structures of your eyes and tests aspects of your vision, such as:
- Visual acuity
- Color vision
- Depth perception
- Visual field testing
Based on the findings, you and your doctor will create an individualized treatment plan to correct or treat your low vision and alleviate your symptoms.
